Navigating Family Court: What I Wish I Knew from the Start

Walking into family court for the first time can be overwhelming—especially if you’re unfamiliar with the legal system. Looking back ten years ago, I remember feeling completely lost. I didn’t even read all the attorney letters I was receiving—motions, stipulations, court notices. They came in every week, and I blindly trusted my attorney to handle it all.

Here’s my strongest piece of advice: read every single court document before you sign it. Even if it takes you longer or you feel unsure—take your time. This isn’t about impressing anyone; it’s about protecting yourself. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Ask your attorney. Ask AI. Ask until you understand.

If you’re dealing with a narcissist, understand this: they will lie without hesitation. Lying on court forms is second nature to them. They’ll manipulate the narrative, twist facts, and project their own behavior onto you—all while appearing convincing on paper.

Stay alert. Stay informed. And most importantly—never sign anything you don’t fully understand.
